I found a sheet of beautiful gold paper butterflies at a craft store and thought they'd be fun to use on dimensional bookmarks. But they were so fragile that I knew they'd tear, so I laminated them! That let me bend the wings to achieve the look of real butterflies, ready to flutter into the sky.
Materials:
-
Banner American QuikFinish Laminating Machine
-
Laminating pouches (size determined by the size of the bookmark you want to make - see project instructions)
-
Striped scrapbook paper (shown: K & Company)
-
Pre-inked word stamps (Just Rite,
www.justritestampers.com)
-
Pink "Gemstone Fasteners" from Magic Scraps
(www.magicscraps.com)
-
Awl or hole punch
Instructions:
| Step
1: |
Cut striped paper into strips. If you are using laminating pouches manufactured for bookmarks, cut the paper to fit. If you are making other sizes, use the laminating pouch that is the best fit (hint: You can fit five or six 8" bookmarks in a document pouch, depending on how wide you make them).
|
| Step
2: |
Stamp each bookmark with the word stamps, making sure that at least one row of stamped words extends the full length of the bookmark to add motion and give the impression that the butterfly has flown across the bookmark. Refer to the photo.
|
| Step
3: |
Laminate bookmarks and gold paper butterflies. Trim bookmarks with a straight edge and craft knife. Trim butterflies with scissors.
|
| Step
4: |
Bend the butterfly wings upward.
|
| Step
5: |
Use the awl or punch to pierce a hole in the butterfly's body. Pierce a hole in the bookmark at the point where you want the butterfly to perch (at one end so it will be visible when the book is closed). Use a Gemstone Fastener to hold the butterfly in place.
|
Options:
Instead of a butterfly, add a dragonfly, angel, cherub, or whatever winged creature (real or imaginary) that you can find or make!
Stamp flowers instead of words.
Write or draw on the bookmark instead of using rubber stamps.
