Here's Lookin' at You Postcard
By Judi Kauffman
Project of the Month, July 2006

Though it might not look as glittery on screen as it does in person, this postcard sparkles quite a bit! By coloring the small shoe, the cheeks on some of the tiny faces, the iris of the eye, and the garments on the dolls with Stardust pens, there are bright and shiny accents throughout the design. When it's laminated, the sparkle remains strong, but none of it can rub off. Laminated postcards feel substantial and important. They're easy to prop up and display, too.

  • Sakura Gelly Roll "Stardust" glitter pens, Pink, Red and Blue

  • Sakura Gelly Roll pen, Black

  • Rubber stamps
    Eye, Judikins
    Text, Inkadinkado
Small shoes, Nick Bantock and Stampa Rosa
    Large shoes, Paperbag Studios
    Doll, Appendage Assemblage
Tiny face, Renaissance Art Stamps, LLC
2 Magic Stamp embossable foam blocks from Clearsnap

  • Embossing heat tool

  • Two pieces of vintage lace

Instructions:

Step 1: Following manufacturer's instructions, heat and emboss two Magic Stamp blocks with lace patterns.

Step 2: Stamp one of the lace blocks, centered, as the main background of the card stock rectangle. Use the pink/purple end of the "Hydrangea" ink pad to pick up ink on the block and blot the inked block with a wet paper towel before stamping for a watercolor effect.

Step 3: Stamp the surrounding border with the other lace pattern using very little hand pressure and ink from the pale blue end of the "Gumdrop" ink pad. Let the ink dry.

Step 4:  Stamp the eye, large shoes, small shoes, text block and tiny faces at an angle as shown. Add four dolls at the right side of the card toward the top, a fifth doll at the left side.

Step 5: Color the pupil and lashes with the black gel pen. Color the iris of the eye with the blue Stardust glitter pen. Color the garments on two of the dolls, the cheeks on some of the tiny faces, and the top section of the round toe shoe with the pink Stardust glitter pen. Color the remaining dolls and bottom half of the round toe shoe with the red Stardust glitter pen.

Step 6: Laminate the postcard. Trim all edges. Use an adhesive-backed label on other side of the card so you can write the address, return address and message.

Options for more laminated postcards:

  • Enhance photos or purchased postcards with Stardust pens.
  • Write or draw your own designs.
  • Decorate postcards with stickers or low relief (flat) collage before adding glittery accents.
