"Torn Tulip" and "Shadow Tulip" table mats

Project of the Month, April 2006

Here's a project for adults and children, a playful way to use torn paper to create unique placemats for the table. If you want to draw guidelines before you tear the shapes, draw very light outlines in pencil on the back of the paper and erase the guidelines before the shapes are sponged with color and glued in place. Tearing freehand is a lot of fun, however, so give it a try! The look of the project should be loose, soft, and handmade.

Materials:
  • Banner American QuikFinish laminating machine
  • Placemat size laminating pouches, one per mat
  • 11" x 17" lightweight paper (one piece per mat, plus more to tear and color)
  • Tsukineko "Smudgee" sponge applicator
  • Dye inks in colors that coordinate with the project (shown: Orange, Green)
  • Glue stick

Instructions:

Step 1: Tear petal and leaf shapes out of lightweight paper. They can be tulips and leaves as shown or any flower, animal or other design you choose.

Step 2: Place the torn shapes on an 11" x 17" piece of paper and move them around till you like the arrangement.

Step 3: Use the "Smudgee" to sponge color onto the shapes, while holding them in place in the desired arrangement. Remove them one at a time as you finish sponging on the color, and glue them in place on a second 11" x 17" paper.

Step 4: Add stems or other details as desired. Sign your name and the date if you want.

Step 5: The "Shadow Tulip" mat is the piece of paper that was under the shapes while you sponged on color. The "Torn Tulip" mat is the one that has the torn shapes glued in place.

Step 6: Laminate the mats and your project is complete! Make one-of-a-kind mats or repeat a favorite design for a matching set.
